M.Sc. (Tech.) Jarno Rajahalme will defend the dissertation “Inter-Domain Incentives and Internet Architecture” on 17 August 2012 in hall T2. In this dissertation we study the effect of the typical inter-domain traffic incentives, stemming from the global structure of the Internet, on both existing (e.g., inter-domain multicast) and newly proposed network architectures (e.g., content-oriented networking).  We find the distribution of costs and benefits to be typically non-uniform, and argue this to be a significant barrier to new architecture deployment in the Internet. Furthermore, we present a network model that can be used to study the inter-domain effects of different network architectures, and therefore to embrace the commercial structure of the Internet in the design of new inter-domain network architectures.
