Antti Ylä-Jääski, Professor antti.yla-jaaski@aalto.fi

Dr.Tech. Antti Ylä-Jääski is a professor for the Data Communications Software since 2002. Antti received his PhD in ETH Zurich 1993. He has worked with Nokia 1994-2004 in several research and research management positions with focus on future Internet, mobile networks, applications, services and service architectures. He was a Research Fellow on Internet Technologies in Nokia Research Center until 2008. In Data Communications Software, Antti’s expertise area is Internet technologies, application and service development in Internet, and network architectures.

Currently his primary research interests include Green ICT, energy efficient communications and computing, cloud computing, massive scale machine-to-machine communication systems and Internet of Things.

Jukka K. Nurminen, Professor jukka.k.nurminen@aalto.fi

Jukka K. Nurminen started as professor of computer science at Aalto University at the beginning of 2011. He has a strong industry background with almost 25 years experience of software research at Nokia Research Center. Jukka’s experience ranges from mathematical modeling to expert systems, from network planning tools to solutions for mobile phones, and from R&D project management to tens of patented inventions.

His current research themes are related to services and applications in distributed systems with an emphasis on mobile solutions. Peer-to-peer technologies and energy-efficiency research are of particular interest.

Jukka received his M.Sc degree in 1986 and Ph.D. degree in 2003 from Helsinki University of Technology.

Tuomas Aura, Professor tuomas.aura@aalto.fi

Tuomas Aura was appointed as professor of computer science at Helsinki University of Technology, now part of the Aalto University, in 2008. He is currently the head of the degree program for Computer Science and Engineering at Aalto, and one of the professors responsible for the international Master’s programs NordSecMob and Mobile Computing — Services and Security.Tuomas’s research themes are related to data security challenges in new communication technologies. His interests include Internet and mobility protocols, denial-of-service resistance, user privacy protection and distributed security policies. Tuomas is especially interested in information security solutions that do not require large investments in infrastructure. He took part e.g. in developing the security solutions for the Mobile IPv6 and SEND protocol standards in the IETF.

Tuomas received his M.Sc. degree in 1996 and Ph.D. degree in 2000 from Helsinki University of Technology. His doctoral thesis was on authorization and availability in distributed systems. In 2001-2009, he worked as a researcher at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, England.

Pan Hui, Adjunct Professor pan.hui@telekom.de

Pan Hui was appointed as Adjunct Professor of social computing and networking at Aalto University in 2012. His current research interests include social networking and computing, cloud computing, mobile and pervasive systems, mining of large scale mobility data, and the application of complex network science in communication systems design. He enjoys working with his very international interns and students. He has published more than 80 scientific papers and book chapters, and have accumulated around 3,000 citations up to 2012. He has founded and chaired several IEEE/ACM conferences/workshops, and served on the technical program committee of  numerous international conferences and workshops including IEEE Infocom, SECON, MASS and Globecom. Pan also has several granted and pending European patents.

Pan received his Ph.D. in computer science from University of Cambridge, and his BEng and MPhil degrees both from University of Hong Kong. He is currently a senior research scientist and principal investigator in Deutsche Telekom Laboratories (T-labs) Germany. He was also an affiliated researcher with Intel Research Cambridge. Sakari Luukkainen received his Ph.D. degree in 2008 from Helsinki University of Technology. In the 1990’s he worked in the Technical Research Centre of Finland, where he directed the Multimedia Communications research group. He also has practical managerial experience in technology companies of the telecommunications industry. Currently he is responsible at Aalto university for the Networking Business education and research, which combines business and technology studies in the telecommunications field. He is also Adjunct Professor in University of Jyväskylä. Dr. Luukkainen’s research interests include technology innovation management and commercialization of new network services.

Zhonghong Ou, Post Doc Researcher zhonghong.ou@aalto.fi

Zhonghong is a post-doc researcher at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Aalto University. He obtained his first Ph.D. degree from University of Oulu, Finland, in August 2010, and a second Ph.D. degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), China, in June 2011. From December 2009 to April 2010, he was a visiting scholar at Internet Real-Time (IRT) Lab at Columbia University. Starting from July 2010, he is a post-doc researcher at Aalto University. From March 2013 through August 2013, he is a visiting researcher at Intel Labs, Portland, United States.

Zhonghong has a wide spectrum of research interests. He got his Ph.D. degree in the field of structured peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. Recently he is working on performance evualuation of virtualization and cloud computing platforms, large-scale machine-to-machine communications, energy optimization in cellular networks (3G and LTE).

Senior Research Scientist Matti Siekkinen received in October 2003 M.Sc. in computer science from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland and M.Sc. in Networks and Distributed Systems from University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, France. He did his master’s thesis work at AT&T Labs-Research in Florham Park, NJ, USA. In October 2006 he obtained his Ph.D. degree from University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis after three years of research work at Institut Eurecom, France, on Internet traffic analysis. From August 2006 until September 2008, he worked in the Distributed Multimedia Systems research group of the University of Oslo.

Matti’s research interests include network measurements, different aspects of data management, autonomic networking, and network architectures in general.

Mario Di Francesco, Post Doc Researcher mario.di.francesco@aalto.fi

Mario is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Aalto University. He is also an adjunct faculty at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Texas at Arlington in the US. He is member of the Data Communication Software research group, as well as of the Center for Research in Wireless Mobility and Networking (CReWMaN). His research interests include wireless sensor networks, pervasive environments, and mobile cloud computing.

Mario obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa in May 2009, under the supervision of Prof. Giuseppe Anastasi. He was a research associate with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Texas at Arlington between September 2009 and December 2011. He was a research fellow at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa in 2009.

Sanna Suoranta, University Lecturer sanna.suoranta@aalto.fi

Sanna Suoranta (Lic.Tech.) is a lecturing researcher and a long-term member of the research group. As an experienced worker she is an important exciting force in the group. In her study area she concentrates on security in data communications and on the identification and authorization of actors which are connected to the doctoral thesis she is writing on the management of digital identities.

Sanna Suoranta is also actively involved in developing teaching. She has devised several practical instructions from reading a book to writing a thesis. She has developed educational methods and practices more functional and efficient for learning and has actively participated in developing the master of science in computer science degree. Sanna Suoranta’s principles in teaching are “beauty in simplicity” and “doing things on time saves you from the hurry”.

Miika Komu, Post Doc researcher, miika.komu@aalto.fi

Miika Komu begun his postgraduate studies in Computer Science and Engineering in Helsinki University of Technology (TKK/Aalto) after receiving his M.Sc. degree on the Fall of 2004. He has been a researcher in Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT) in multiple projects since 2002, and continued his research in Data Communications Software group at the Aalto university since 2010. Miika finished his doctoral studies during Fall 2012.

Miika has been involved with IETF standardization for many years. In addition to other software projects, his largest contribution has been to the development of Host Identity Protocol for Linux (HIPL). Miika’s  research interest include network protocols, security and architectures, naming and APIs, cloud networking (especially OpenStack) and Software Defined Networks (SDN).

Prof. Sasu Tarkoma, Senior Research Scientist sasu.tarkoma@aalto.fi

Sasu Tarkoma received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science. He is currently professor at University of Helsinki. He has managed and participated in national and international research projects at the University of Helsinki, Helsinki University of Technology (TKK), and Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT). He has worked in the IT industry as a consultant and chief system architect, and he is principal member of research staff at Nokia Research Center. He has over 100 publications including 56 refereed scientific articles, and has also contributed to several books on mobile middleware.

His current research projects include IPOS (Information Processing in Overlay Systems) funded by the Academy of Finland, UbiLife funded by Tekes, and the EU project PSIRP (Publish/Subscribe Internet Routing Paradigm).

Prof. Andrei Gurtov, adjuct professor andrei.gurtov@aalto.fi

Andrei Gurtov received his M.Sc (2000) and Ph.D. (2004) degrees in Computer Science from the University of Helsinki, Finland. He was appointed a Professor at University of Oulu in the area of Wireless Internet in December 2009. He is also part-time Principal Scientist leading the Networking Research group at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology focusing on the Host Identity Protocol and next generation Internet architecture. He is co-chairing the IRTF research group on HIP and teaches as an adjunct professor at Aalto University and University of Helsinki. Previously, his research focused on the performance of transport protocols in heterogeneous wireless networks. In 2000-2004, he served as a senior researcher at Sonera Finland contributing to performance optimization of GPRS/UMTS networks, intersystem mobility, and IETF standardization. In 2003, he spent six months as a visiting researcher in the International Computer Science Institute at Berkeley working with Dr.Sally Floyd on simulation models of transport protocols in wireless networks. In 2004, he was a consultant at the Ericsson NomadicLab. Prof. Gurtov is a co-author of over 90 publications including a book, research papers, patents, and IETF RFCs. Olli Mäkinen received his M.Sc.(Tech) degree from the Computer Science and Engineering Department of Helsinki University of Technology in June 2009 with a major in Telecommunications Management. He is a doctoral student at the department focusing on mobile social media services and their business models, rejoining Aalto after a year-long participation in the Nordic Battlegroup, a multinational EU crisis management force.

Antero Juntunen received his M.Sc.(Tech) degree from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the Aalto University School of Science and Technology in March 2010, majoring in Networking Business. He has continued as a doctoral student at the department after his graduation and taken part in the Flexible Services and Cloud Software research programs. His doctoral studies focus on analyzing the business models of new mobile services and have included topics such as mobile ticketing, near field communication, and mobile cloud computing.

Yu Xiao received her M.Sc degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications(BUPT) on April 2007, and continued her doctoral studies at Helsinki University of Technology from September 2007. She has participated in Ubilife and Future Internet SHOK projects. Her research interests include power modeling, policy management and energy-efficient adaptations on mobile devices.

Yu Xiao was a research assistant in System Technology Lab at Intel China Research Center July 2005-March 2006, and SDET intern in Office 2007 team at Micrsoft China R&D Center April-December 2006. She was involved in the development of ‘Multimedia Session System with Mobile/Roaming Supported’ (China Next Generation Internet Project) at BUPT June-December 2006.

Yrjö Raivio graduated M.Sc.(Tech.) in 1995 from Helsinki University of Technology, department of Electrical Engineering, with major Telecommunications. Lic.Sc.(Tech.) degree he earned in 2009 from Helsinki University of Technology, department of Computer Science and Engineering. The major was Telecommunications Software and the thesis topic was called “Mobile Services and the Internet – A Study of Emerging Business Models”. Raivio was leading at Nokia Networks Services Research team between years 1999-2005, and developed at Nokia Siemens Networks new mobile service business models between years 2007 and 2009. At the moment he is a researcher at Aalto University, School of Science and Technology, Networking Business group, aiming at doctoral degree by end of 2011. Raivio’s main research topics include open telecommunication network APIs, mobile service innovation and related business models.

Nie Pin received his M.Sc.(Tech) from Computer Science and Engineering department, Helsinki University of Technology (April, 2006), majoring in Telecommunications Software. He continues his doctoral studies after the graduation. Nie Pin works as a researcher in the lab, focusing on networking security and Internet services and applications development. Currently, he is working on the middleware design in a wireless sensor network project,ISMO.

Nie Pin was a guest researcher at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in USA from September 2007 to June 2008. He was involved in the development of the Project 25.

Aapo Kalliola received his M.Sc.(Tech) from Aalto University School of Science and Technology in June 2010. During his studies he worked for several technology companies and wrote his Master’s thesis at EADS Secure Networks.

Aapo started his doctoral studies in the Data Communications Software research group in August 2010. His research is focused on defending against Denial of Service attacks without changing the network infrastructure. His research has been funded by Micrsoft Research and the Ministry of Defence.

Li Ming received his M.Sc degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) on April 2008, and has continued on doctoral studies at Helsinki University of Technology since September 2008. His research interests include network architecture, Internet technologies and mobile service composition.

Li Ming was involved in the development of CNGI-QoS subsystem in the China Next Generation Internet Project at BUPT from March, 2006 to October, 2007 and also in the design and development of Multidimensional Service Framework for Mobile Environment (MSFME) project funded by Nokia at BUPT from October, 2007 to July, 2008.
