Modules for Studies

T-121 User Interfaces and Usability -courses are offered in three modules:

User Interfaces and Usability (A3)
Ihmisläheiset tietojärjestelmät (A3)
Usability School (special module C)

User Interfaces and Usability (A3) -module is offered for the degree program in Computer Science, for the degree program in Information Networks we offer a module in Finnish, Ihmisläheiset tietojärjestelmät (A3). Usability School is a special module (C) which is offered for those taking either of the aforementioned A3 modules.

User Interfaces and Usability (A3) 20cr

Responsible professors: Marko Nieminen, Petri Vuorimaa, Tapio Takala

User-centred design aims to develop products and systems that are easy to use from the end users’ point of view. The module enables students to design interactive interfaces and products with high usability. After completing the included courses students possess the knowledge and skills to apply user-centred design and evaluation methodology in product and system development projects. User-centred design takes into account human characteristics as a user of a product, existing requirements from context of use and the potential arising from technical possibilities. The module enables students to work as a member of a multidisciplinary product development team.

The T-121-courses are given in English.

Compulsory courses:

  • T-121.5151 Methods for user-centred product development 3cr
  • Select at least one of the following (it is recommended to take them both):
    • T-121.5350 Strategic user-centred design 9cr
    • T-121.5450 Interaction design and evaluation 8cr

Optional courses: select as many needed to complete the module:

  • T-121.5500 Special assignment in user-centred product development 1-8cr
  • T-121.5850 Individual course on usability 1-10cr
  • T-121.5900 Seminar on user interfaces and usability 3-8cr

Usability School (C) 20cr

Prof. Marko Nieminen

The Usability School module deepens the studies of user interfaces and usability by broadening the view of usability to industrial design and cognitive science. It is a multidisciplinary curriculum provided jointly by TKK (Department of Computer Science), University of Art and Design (Industrial and Strategic Design) and University of Helsinki (Cognitive Science). The module teaches co-operative work in multidisciplinary teams.

Each participating university selects five new students each year to the Usability School. At TKK, the period of application is in May. The selected students are allowed to take the courses offered for Usability School for the period of two years. Courses included in the Usability School module are provided by each of the universities and are verified annually from the course list of participating universities.

Most of the courses are given in English and all the courses can be taken in English.

USchool web pages offer more information about the USchool and its studies.

Compulsory courses:

  • T-121.5155 Introduction to Usability School 2cr
  • Cog101 (HY) Johdatus kognitiotieteeseen 5op
